A cute idea, and sure to inspire more inventive solutions, Cake Vintage’s Vintage Key Plates turned wall hooks are a great, simple way to add character to your bathroom, entryway, kitchen- you name it! Just $25 from The Inspired Room. If you have the time and inclination, you can make a project of finding and making similar ones, or, just scrounge around in your garage and see what else could be turned into a unique, utilitarian conversation piece.

But at $25, why bother! Just order this lovely and hang it already!!!!!

Colored Caulk

There’s nothing worse than spending a ton of money on a new kitchen or bath; lovingly picking out your tiles, countertops, appliances, flooring; dealing with months of living in a construction zone; only to put the finishing touches on and find that the gleaming white line of caulk the plumber added on the last day of work is the only thing your eye goes to when you walk in the room. That’s why I love the geniuses at Red Devil. Their “Create-a-Color” caulk can be easily mixed with any color latex paint to camouflage what you don’t want to see, and let the things you do want to see shine! Available for purchase separately, the system requires a specially formulated Red Devil Create A Color Caulk Cartridge (for $6.06 on Amazon), a syringe for the latex paint (25 Syringesfor $22.18 but you can likely find cheaper options if needed) and the Red Devil 4070 Create A Color Caulk Mixer($26.20). Just think how much you spent on the shower curtain, and you know it is worth every penny.

The shop opened in June 2009 as a “modern, one-stop general store for our neighborhood,” owners Philippa Content and Christopher Winterbourne say. But since they ship anywhere in the world, it’s for your neighborhood too…wherever your hood is. An impeccably curated shop of tasteful treasures from Turkish Towels to rain boots to a wooden handled bottle brush. Just looking at their site inspires you to upgrade everything you own!

You know how I feel about commercial packaging- it takes away from the clean look of kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, dressing tables, etc. Well, I found this amazing resource for glass bottles (and jars and jugs) that sells mostly to businesses- but with no minimum order, it’s a fantastic resource for anyone. It’s called Specialty Bottle and they have a huge selection of blue, amber, and clear bottles that you can transfer soaps, toners, moisturizers-just about anything- into for a clean coordinated look. And the best part is they are SO inexpensive. Literally pennies!

Science Class Chic

Maybe I did learn something in high school chemistry after all…I learned that there’s beauty in the simple industrial classroom aesthetic. You can make great use of ultra-affordable lab finds in your home, with a little bit of creativity. Just look at how my friend wrangled all of her aspirin, vitamins and the like with some Erlenmeyer Flasks in her bath…SO smart! Of course you can use them as vases, herb holders, dish soap dispensers. Endless possibilities, just endless….

For real deal science supplies like those flasks-or beakers, graduated cylinders, test tubes, etc.- you can go to any number of online sites like Best Science Supplies. That’s definitely the inexpensive way to go. However, there are also some housewares companies doing their own take on science class classics. Like:

You can even go larger with the theme… think furniture, blackboards, periodic tables painted on your wall. Dish Soap Done Right

Yet another way to add make your home a little more rad, with a simple, small, inexpensive change. Put your dishsoap in a fabulous vintage (or vintage-looking) soda bottle for a little added sumpin’ sumpin’ to everyone’s least favorite chore. I like Method Dish Soap- yummy scents, pretty colors. Also, it really does rinse super squeaky clean. Pour that bad boy into a bottle of your choosing…you’ll find an unbelievable assortment at Soda Pop Stop (which is the online home of a store here in LA that I love called Galco’s). They carry over 450 different sodas in glass bottles, and I’m pretty sure heaven looks like something similar. Add a metal pour spout and you have yerself a touch of classic style instead of yet another plastic bottle cluttering up your counter.
